Southern Rhone Wines from the 2007 Premier Vintage
This month we chose to highlight the Southern Rhone with the 2007 vintage. 2007 was a great year for wine region with bountiful fruit and fine tannins distinguishing the wines of the Southern Rhône. These wines have an attractive finesse despite high alcohol (as a result of waiting for tannins to fully ripen). Blends containing late-ripening Mourvèdre, Syrah and/or Cinsault are fresher and firmer than their rich and heady 100%-Grenache counterparts. Higher acidity, too, promising better ageing potential. According to wine guru Robert Parker the Southern Rhone’s 2007 vintage is, “the greatest of our lifetime.”

August 3-Pack: Exploring a winemaker’s palate and techniques
Matt Cline’s winemaking career began in 1982 helping his brother at his Oakley winery. In 1985, Matt began as winemaker and creative director at Cline Cellars. Over the course of his 16-year career at Cline, Matt was responsible for branding Cline Cellars’ unique style of winemaking. One of Matt’s biggest credit’s at Cline was being one of Wine & Spirits Magazine’s “American Wineries of the Year” in both 1999 and 2001.
In 2001, Matt started Trinitas Cellars, focusing on producing Old-Vine Zinfandel, Mataro, and Petite Sirah. In 2006, Matt and his wife Erin sold Trinitas and shortly thereafter, began Three Wine Company. Today his focus is on California heritage grapes: Zinfandel, Mataro (Mourvedre), Carignane and Petite Sirah. He is a master in sourcing and finding some of the oldest vineyards in California. The dirt, the microclimate, and sustainable winegrowing (from vineyard to bottle) form the cornerstones of “three”.
Foods to pair with these wines include sausage, beef, lamb, pork and venison, either braised, grilled or roasted. The lower tannin in this wine can accommodate some heat from chiles, so ribs with a spicy barbecue sauce are considered almost a classic match. Cheese friendly choices include aged Parmesan, Dry Monterey Jack and Manchego.
This August 3-pack from Matt Cline is a great opportunity to explore a winemaker’s palate and techniques and how the different grapes and blends stack up to one another.

July 3-Pack: Gruner Veltliners meant for Summer drinking
Gruner Veltliner (GROO-ner VELT-lee-ner) is not a German fighter plane, nor is it the name of a character in the Sound of Music. Rather, it is a grape -- the most popularly planted vine in Austria, in fact. Since very little Austrian wine ships out to the US, you may have never hear of it. But it is a wine well worth trying.
The very best Gruner Veltliner wines have distinctive, pungent aromatics, an exotic array of fruit, herb and spice flavors, attractive mineral undertones and mouthpuckering acidity. It also has a reputation of being a particularly food-friendly wine that can be even paired with the ominous wine killer, asparagus. Also this is a wine for Summer and really should be had all summer long. It’s a natural choice to bring to a party, the lake or BBQ and our with our July 3-pack special you can stock up without breaking the bank. Plus two of these wines are 1-liter bottles, so you are getting and extra 250 ml to enjoy!
